Today, in Minsk, the capital of Belarus, a major subway station exploded, killing seven and wounding around fifty others, as officials reported. Igor Tumash, a fifty-two year old civilian caught in the explosion, said to news reporters Associayed Press, he was getting off a train when "there was a large flash, an explosion and heavy smoke. I fell on my knees and crawled ... bodies were piled on each other."
He saw a man with a severe wound in his leg and quickly went to help him.
"But then, I saw he was dead..." Tumash said, starting to cry.
It is believed that a bomb was planted at the station as a protest against a harsh crackdown by the government against a disputed political election. Discuss.
@KoD: In a way, "terrorism" is a means of protest. As such, it falls under both. Clearly, someone is protesting the crackdown, going so far as to plant a bomb, rather than sit and have a joint...
Whoa bro, better slow down bro, don't wanna be a bro, bro.
12 people are now confirmed dead, and over 150 wounded. Belarus authorities have detained several suspects they believe were directly involved in the devastating bombing. Motive is likely that the recent election was supposedly rigged and for the obvious crackdown on protestors. Many opponents of Alexander Lukashenko, the elected President, are either detained or under surveillance.
Imprisoning political dissidents pretty much stinks of totalitarian action. A real disgrace for even a twisted republic state as Belarus. Lukashenko himself has been two-faced, openly supporting Russia, yet slandering them in private; he even dared to question the bombing as a "gift" from foreign operatives, while also saying that whoever did this had "messed with the wrong guy". In any event, the political connections he has long sought with Russia, the European Union, and even the US are destined to go sour.
No matter who planned that subway bombing, or whether it was a protest or not, it is still terrorism--which I define to be any criminal act that is designed to further a specific goal by creating terror. This is no exception to that.
