I was new to the school and I was quite nervous as I headed for my new locker. To hide all the scars on my arms and back I had decided to wear my grey hoodie and my black skinny jeans. As I was headed to my locker I noticed a guy around 6'1" slam his locker shut. Looking closer, I saw a lot of vile names written on his locker door. A voice came into my mind and I stopped to listen to it.
"That's the young man you need to protect, Alane," it said. I instantly understood. The boy punched his locker as I walked over to him. He turned around and met my eyes. His were a beautiful deep brown. He quickly looked down. He quietly whispered, probably to himself, "looks are deceiving". I responded carefully as to not hurt him more.
"That's truly aweful," I said, acknowledging the writing. He nodded and I could sense that he was scared, hurt, and afraid. I asked his name.
"I'm... I'm Josh. Josh Miller." he seemed timid as he said his name in a murmur. I told him my name. I lightly put my hand on shoulder and could feel all his pain from the abuse from his father. He brushed my hand off his shoulder. I asked if he was okay even though I knew he wasn't. He lied and told me "yes". I wasn't going to fail like my last guarding mission. "Well, if you need anything, I'm your new friend." I pulled out a slip of paper and gave him my number. I told him it was good to meet him, smiled, and went on to my locker.
As I did, I thought to myself, "I will not fail you, Annalise Miller. I will keep him safe with my life". Her voice responded, "I am sure you will not fail, Alane. You have given him a bit of happiness... hopefully more to come". And with that I went to class which Josh was in.
