For quite awhile now, I've been pondering many things about life lately, and most recently, abortion.
Some of the younger members may not know what abortion is, so I'll give you a short definition. Essentially, it's ending the life of the fetus (unborn baby) inside of a pregnant woman.
Now, here in the United States, abortion is legal, but has created (well, the issue of whether or not a woman has the right to) quite the split, with people concerned with the issue taking either the pro-life (prohibiting abortion) and pro-choice (able to choose whether or not to carry the baby).
I personally am against abortion, (except in cases where the mother would be greatly injured or killed). I simply cannot seem to differentiate it from having someone murdered. I've personally only known one person who has had there fetus "terminated," and she was a girl at my high school. She talked to me about it before she had the operation done, and I couldn't help but notice that she refused to say that she was having her baby killed. She used phrases such as "terminating her pregnancy" or "eliminating the embryo" to describe the ordeal. This appears to be a way to buffer one's conviction with easy words. No one wants to have a baby "killed."
However, I'm not sure if the government, or anyone, has the "best" answer for the abortion question. For example, if the government is allowed to make the choice for women that they cannot abort in order to protect the child, what's to stop them from "protecting [insert here]" for the "Greater Good"?
The whole abortion topic is a very hot button issue. As with many problems in the world, I do not know what exactly should be done about it. Hopefully, it's the "right" one.
What is y'all's (is that even proper English?) opinions on the subject?
omg this is so sad! i saw pictures of babies after the abortion was done and i just felt like i was going to scream everyone abortion is a cruel violent thing to do! if you dont want the baby you could just put it in an orphanage AFTER its BORN!
Ok think for one moment u were a feedus (i no poor spelling) would u like to be killed bye ur parents just because they dont wont u or the got by been raped. So just remember the more abortions the less people. which means no more people thus ur slowly destroying the world through "legal murder". ever if the mother might died morally the baby should live.
I stand with the minority of this blog. I think abortion should be a last resort, and only used if the mother is in danger of being harmed.
Ok, I'm going to try using an analogy. Let's say, in the near future, we finally find a planet with the potential for life. It is in the Goldilocks zone, it has water - all the necessary building blocks to create life. Then we dicover bacteria on that planet. Bacteria that will one day form into sentient beings. Would we destroy these bacteria? No! We would be watching eagerly. Waiting. Hoping. What is the difference between this and giving birth?
We aren't fetuses. Fetuses aren't dominant over animals on the earth. Can a fetus defend itself against a bear? No. A grown person can rarely even do that. And we ARE ANIMALS.
And I don't know how old you are, but protection can fail, you know. And rapists don't exactly use condoms.
If abortion became illegal people will STILL GET THEM (just like every other illegal thing), they'll just resort back to dangerous methods of terminating their pregnancy which will most likely result in the mother and baby/fetus dying.
Why can't you people just get your noses out of other people's business and let them do what they want. You can go and NEVER have an abortion if you want to, we're not stopping you, but why can't you just leave it alone so that women can get safe abortions in a healthy, clean environment, if necessary.
My stance is that: A fetus only has 3 differences from a "human". Size, Location, Dependence. None of those are valid reasons to say that a fetus is inferior.
And a fetus also has the potential to be the next big serial killer. And, for somebody who's cosidering abortion, the chances of the fetus growing up and turning out "bad" would be higher, I'm guessing, because the person obviously isn't ready for/does not want a child.
They'd be less crowded if people got more abortions too.. haha. And I never actually said a fetus wasn't a person, and yeah, an "animal" is better than a fetus. A fetus can't even survive out of the womb.
@neon The fetus hasn't developed the capibility to do those things yet. What my previous post meant is that no one here has yet to state exactly why killing a fetus is any different from killing a developed being. So you're essentially saying that because the fetus isn't aware of existing yet, one can kill it?
So you can't tell the difference between killing an adult, with friends, family, a job, hopes, dreams, emotions, a fully developped brain.. and killing a fetus which wouldn't be fully developped, no hopes, dreams, friends, job, just a mindless being not aware of it's own existance? Scary.
Agree with pikachu and drwho i guess, too lazy to write out all my arguments, plus they're basically the same as a lot here. I'm pro-choice. And before somebody brings up this lame old "arguement", as a former feus, no I would not care in the least if i'd been aborted.
And as a screwed up person, I'd just like to say, If you can't tell the difference between killing a full grown adult, and killing a freakin' fetus, you sir, need therapy.
@Protistra: Um, in case you haven't noticed, our Country's a little too bigoted to let anything be President right now. So, scrap that shield-point too...
@Skittles: You could, and I applaud that.[not really] Another thing. What makes this different from "pulling the plug" on someone in a coma? I'm using this to defend it, in case it comes off as attacking abortion...
@drwho Um, what's to say when something is counted as being "alive"? Using that logic, I could kill a person in a comatose state with no repurcussions since they are brain dead. o.o
Abortion is murder unless it is needed to save the mother's life. In that case it would be legally considered self-defense because its act is preserving a life, rather than causing both lives to be lost.
You can see the double-standard in cases like that of Scott Peterson, who killed his ex-wife and their unborn child. He was charged with first- and second-degree murder, respectively. Yet, if she had aborted the child, she would not have been charged with first-degree murder. How can the law accept one person killing the fetus but not the other?
Abortion is a brutal process that inflicts a great deal of pain on the baby, and many of them temporarily survive the process when it takes place past the first trimester. In such cases, it is common to hear that the practitioners (They are not doctors because they break the Hippocratic Oath.) simply toss those newborn babies aside to suffocate with their underdeveloped lungs. Imagine dying of asphyxiation; it does not sound like a painless way to go.
What many people don't realize is that Norma McCorvey (as Jane Roe for anonymity) from the famous Roe v. Wade abortion case became a strong pro-lifer after seeing a chart in a hospital that showed the progression of fetal development. This comes from her book Won by Love:
"I was sitting in O.R.'s offices when I noticed a fetal development poster. The progression was so obvious, the eyes were so sweet. It hurt my heart, just looking at them. I ran outside and finally, it dawned on me. 'Norma', I said to myself, 'They're right'. I had worked with pregnant women for years. I had been through three pregnancies and deliveries myself. I should have known. Yet something in that poster made me lose my breath. I kept seeing the picture of that tiny, 10-week-old embryo, and I said to myself, that's a baby! It's as if blinders just fell off my eyes and I suddenly understood the truth — that's a baby!
"I felt crushed under the truth of this realization. I had to face up to the awful reality. Abortion wasn't about 'products of conception'. It wasn't about 'missed periods'. It was about children being killed in their mother's wombs. All those years I was wrong. Signing that affidavit, I was wrong. Working in an abortion clinic, I was wrong. No more of this first trimester, second trimester, third trimester stuff. Abortion — at any point — was wrong. It was so clear. Painfully clear"
The stem cell argument is a moot point because absolutely zero diseases have been cured with embryonic stem cells. Those cells have always been rejected by the recipient's body. Politicians just use that argument for political gain. The future of stem cells come from adult cells that are pulled from marrow, blood, skin, teeth buds, and other areas. The hold-up has been that most stem cells are not in dense enough quantities to "refine" for usefulness, but progress is made daily.
I would say with so many ways to prevent a baby and a person gets pregnant still. Then I would feel no sympathy for them. If they want to "terminate" the baby they can go right ahead but, they would have to use their money to pay for it. Instead of the gov't paying for the abortion.
You know, you're right. Pro choice all the way. The fetus could be used for stem cells and save lives, too. While we're at it, we should legalize murder. Your nutrient-rich bodies would make great fertilizer for our crops. Then we could feed the starving children of the world! It's a win-win!
Many people decide whether or not someone lives. It happens everyday. Not just through abortion, but, through the Justice System, crime, and such. So, yes. I believe so. Also, the cells/Fetus still live, technically, through the new Host.
I am pro-choice. It is a woman's choice, not mine, Obama's, or anyone else's. If it must be done, it has to be. There are sometimes reasons why a baby must absolutely be aborted, you know.
Hmm, touchy subject... I congratulate the way you showed your point of view in this matter, although I have to say I am "pro-choice" in this opinion. A lot of my opinions were somewhat expressed in Waste's comment, so I have nothing other to say. Thumbs up.
@Waste: Thank you. And, probably shouldn't have mentioned the last bit. xD
Anyway, another thing, on how Waste said they bring god into it. Every so often, in the summer, usually, some big Pro-Life Group comes to the Loop[the cnter of Chicago], during Rush Hour, in which many business people areheading home, and when tiny little kids are leaving the museums. Now, these Christians are showing these huge 4'2" images of unborn fetuses to everyone, and a crying Jesus on the reverse. They keep shouting and calling us "Devil's Minions", because we tell tem to screw off, while they get up in our faces with these photos. Is that right? Tell me, please.
(Pro-choice is when you believe women should decide whether or not to go on with the pregnancy. Pro-life is believing a baby should be born no matter what.)
I think a girl should decide what she wants to do with HER body. I think adoption is a much better idea but if you prefer abortion than I'm okay with it.
I will NEVER judge someone badly if they abort a fetus. I think a fetus becomes human(I don't think that's the word I'm looking for lol) when they fully develop a brain. But I detest when a girl keeps getting abortions! One or two is okay but when you're on you're 4, don't you think you're doing something wrong?
I also effing HATE when ultra delusional religious people pull up God into some of these cases. Not ALL of them but I hate when they say God wants it to turn into a baby. Um, first of, what if that baby turns into a lesbian? What if it turns into a gay boy? Well you start calling it an abomination? (-_- )
Please don't say you care about babies getting life if you won't help in any way what's so ever after that sucker pops outta there! Not everyone has the right resources.
My aunt has over 5 kids because both her baby daddies left her! She never even thought about abortion. I think she's a brave woman for trying to raise a massive family by herself!
I also think getting stem cells from aborted fetus is amazing. It's the future of science.
I didnt read the blog, by the way. Just want to put that on the table lol
I disagree. I am Pro-Choice, for many reasons, one being spite. Another, dear Trolls, is "freedom". I don't usually pull patriotic crap as an argumentive defense, but, I'm treading on cracked ice here. It is freedom of choice to choose to destroy this physical being, which, is a conglomerate of cells, like you and me. However, dear morons... The Stem Cells, "harvested" from the Fetus' spinal chord, are beneficial in medical practice, acting as a "Wild Card" in tiissue re-growth. Argue with me on this, I implore. Your religious opinion, My factual opinion.
If you don't want to keep a baby of someone who raped you, why not give the baby up after it has been born. You can give up a baby at a hospital right after you give birth to it. The baby lives, and you don't have to deal with it. The only downside is you will have to go through the pain of birth or you have to live with the guilt you "terminated" an innocent baby.
